[Review] Supergirl Episode 3×18: “Shelter From the Storm”

written by Cara Russell

SPOILER WARNINGS ARE IN EFFECT

I had to watch this episode twice to figure out what happened, and it’s still pretty slippery. That’s not a great sign.

In short:

  • Legion future is saved, yaaaay! They go home.
  • Mon-El ditches his wife and best friend to stay in the past Because Reasons.
  • Reign is captured and returned to Lena as a lab rat.
  • Lena is justifiably suspicious of Supergirl but is framed as The Bad Person in this situation, Because Reasons.

Also: something about Sam’s adoptive mother getting a redemption moment (I, for one, have no sympathy), and M’yrnn still suffering from escalating memory loss, and the depression in the moments that he realizes what he’s missing. However, he still manages to save the day with…some…sort of…wisdom from a past event that gives J’onn and Supergirl the key to their current predicament.

While it seems like progress on a lot of threads, nothing positive resonated with me. I’m not thrilled that my favorite parts of the Legion have left, or allowing Mon-El to cheat on his wife in a way with his old flame. Nor did I enjoy seeing Supergirl and Lena pitted against each other for no appreciable purpose except drama. “Stronger Together,” indeed.

Supergirl airs Monday nights at 8 Eastern/7 Central on the CW. Cara can be reached on Twitter @virtualcara.
