[Review] The Flash (2014) Episode 2×11: “The Reverse-Flash Returns”

This week’s Flashcap says goodbye to Kevin and Bethany’s reign of tyranny and welcomes Becky and George’s reign of tyranny! Both sides are clearly just as bad here on CW’s The Flash.

It’s nice to have the episode intro narrative kick off with Barry acknowledging that he’s been putting off dealing with things, which he still does even as he narrates, patrolling the city for small crimes instead of confronting the more active issues in his life, like Patty, his family, Zoom, etc. As much as it can sometimes be frustrating as a viewer, I also appreciate that the characters are imperfect people, because for the most part, the show does eventually get around to calling the behavior out.

[Review] The Flash (2014) Episode 2×10: “Potential Energy”

This week, more than one person says goodbye. Slow down and take a breather, because it’s time to take a look at CW’s The Flash.

The theme of this episode could be described as “HOW DO I RELATIONSHIP?”

Anybody could probably tell you the answer: it takes work, it takes trust, it takes love. The thing about trust, though, is that it’s a leap of faith. You have to hope that someone will catch you if you jump. If you don’t know that you’ll be met halfway, you stop at the edge and suddenly there’s this chasm between you and someone else, one you didn’t see before.

I mean, it’s all metaphorical, here. But you don’t really run up on that chasm until the moment comes when you have to trust, and be trusted. You have to meet in the middle; it doesn’t work any other way.

[Review] Star Wars: Thrawn by Timothy Zahn

I’ve been a Star Wars fan for most of my life, but it wasn’t until my late teens that I was really turned on to the novels in the Extended Universe. I spent a good portion of my twenties voraciously reading the next chapters in the post-Return Of the Jedi era, until I felt a sense of closure at the end of the Legacy Of the Force series. Six years later, Disney bought Lucasfilm, ending the Extended Universe and establishing a new one. However, Disney did an interesting thing when it grandfathered the Clone Wars cartoon into their new cartoon, Star Wars: Rebels: they brought back fan-favorite characters, such as Ahsoka Tano. It was a sign that not all the old EU characters were destined for the great space dustbin.

[Review] Horizon: Zero Dawn

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: humans make machines, machines have pretty big flaw that no one notices until it’s too late, machines cause apocalypse, humans now live in a post-apocalyptic world fighting against machines.

I know, I’ve just described The Matrix, Terminator, and countless other stories. The hubris of humankind when creating machines is a theme that’s so well-tread that we all fear Siri will one day rule the Earth…after she tells us “drool the mirth” isn’t in our contacts. While the robot apocalypse theme isn’t a new one, it’s still possible to take that theme in a new direction to make a unique story.
